Pennation Angle

Biomechanics

Short definition

Angle between muscle-fibre direction and the tendon line of action.

Full definition

The pennation angle is the angle at which fibres attach to the tendon. A larger angle packs more fibres (greater PCSA, greater force) but reduces the force component along the tendon, and varies with muscle length.

Examples

Triceps pennation angle at maximum contraction is about 20°.
