Tempo (4-phase)

Biomechanics

Short definition

Samson-fit four-phase tempo notation: eccentric — pause at bottom — concentric — pause at top.

Full definition

The four-phase tempo is Samson-fit's extended notation refining the classic three-phase one (see Tempo) by adding a second pause. Format "E-PB-C-PT": eccentric phase, pause at bottom (bar at chest), concentric phase, pause at top (lockout). Example 2-1-1-1: 2 s lowering, 1 s hold at the bottom, 1 s lifting, 1 s hold at the top. Zeros are allowed: 3-1-1-0 — no top pause. The MIDA engine parses all four phases separately: the eccentric phase gets a ×1.30 overload (up to 180% MVC), the bottom pause gets minimal 20% activation, the concentric phase — the base intensity adjusted by the force-velocity curve, the top pause — 10%. Used in the "Add exercise" modal for the "Dynamic (eccentric + concentric)" and "Eccentric only" modes: rep work and rest times are derived from the sum of phases, no separate time fields are set.

Examples

Bench press with a 2-1-1-1 tempo: 2 s lowering, 1 s pause on the chest, 1 s press, 1 s lockout.
